Job Summary The Medication Assistant (MA) acts as a caregiver, delivering resident-focused nursing care and daily living support to assigned residents under the guidance of a charge nurse. The MA is knowledgeable in providing age-appropriate care that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of residents as outlined in their care plans. Responsibilities include: Assisting with essential health care needs, including daily living activities such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, and undressing. Obtaining and recording vital signs while offering psycho-social support and personal care. Helping residents with mobility, including transferring, repositioning, and walking, using proper techniques and equipment. Facilitating food preparation and dining experiences, ensuring a positive atmosphere. Administering prescribed medications as directed by a licensed nurse, adhering to state regulations. Documenting resident care outcomes, medication administration, and any changes in condition. Collecting non-invasive body fluid samples and vital signs. Providing housekeeping and laundry services to maintain clean living areas. Supporting wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation. Engaging in departmental committees and task forces as needed. Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred, but not mandatory. Preferred minimum age of 18. Prior experience as a clinical or nursing assistant in long-term care is advantageous. Must complete annual department-specific competency testing and maintain continuing education credits, with a minimum of 12 hours required each year based on state regulations. Must hold all necessary department-specific certifications. Valid driver's license and auto insurance may be required in certain cases. State-Specific Requirements: Iowa: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification required, along with successful completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course. Minnesota: Nursing assistant certification and completion of a 75-hour course, registered with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry, along with a state-approved Trained Medication Assistant course. North Dakota: CNA certification required, with successful completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course. Medication Assistant I certification needed for Assisted Living or Basic Care facilities; Medication Assistant II certification for skilled nursing facilities. South Dakota: Completion of the state-approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course is necessary.
