HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I SALARY: $4,497 – $5,466/mo. FILING
DEADLINE: 01/12/2023 POSITION DESCRIPTION The Heavy Equipment
Mechanic I class is responsible for the maintenance and repair of
heavy equipment including; City trucks, construction equipment,
refuse trucks, and other heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
Incumbents respond to road calls, perform tests and inspect
heavy-duty engines, transmissions, electrical systems, air
compressors and other sub-systems. One vacancy exists in the Fleet
Maintenance Division of the General Services Department. Immediate
and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a
period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is
created, with the option of extending that period at the City's
discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this
recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.

monthly premiums for PPO medical, dental and vision for employee

health and dependent care expenses. • DEFERRED COMPENSATION:
Voluntary 457 plan with Fidelity Investments to increase your
retirement savings. • VACATION LEAVE: Accrue 8-14.66 hours per
month. • SICK LEAVE: Eight (8) hours per month, available after 90
days. • HOLIDAYS: Ten (10) City-observed annual holidays plus
birthday and two (2) personal days. • SHORT TERM DISABILITY:
Provided through California SDI program. • BILINGUAL PREMIUM PAY:
$50 per month. • HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT: To reimburse
retirement medical insurance. • RETIREMENT: City of Fresno
Retirement Systems, one of the best funded public systems in the
state. Reciprocity with other public California systems. Vested in
Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not
participate in Social Security. • DROP (Deferred Retirement Option
Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to
deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the
Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno
for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested.
Benefits includes ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest

REQUIREMENTS Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or
before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the
examination. • Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent
GED completion; AND One (1) year of full-time paid experience
performing routine maintenance and simple repairs on diesel and
gasoline powered cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment, and
other vehicles and equipment. • Possess a valid California Driver's
License at time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire must
provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their
driving record. • Eligible candidates certified for consideration
for this position and subsequently selected following a department
interview will be required to successfully complete a Department of
Justice fingerprint process prior to employment with the City of
Fresno. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS • Possess a valid California
Driver’s License at time of appointment. Within thirty (30) days of
appointment must obtain a valid Commercial Instructional Permit.
Within six (6) months must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial
Class B California Driver’s License with required endorsements and
without air brake restriction. • Within twelve (12) months of
appointment, must possess three (3) valid certifications issued by
the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in
the following components: • Diesel Engines (T2) • Drive Train (T3)
• Brakes (T4) • Incumbents must take all three certification
examinations within the first six (6) months of appointment.
Failure to obtain the ASE certifications within twelve (12) months
of appointment will be cause for termination from this class. •
This class is in a flexibly staffed series, which requires one year
of satisfactory service before an employee can “flex” to the
journey level. Employees in classes that require one year of
service for flexing will not serve an additional probationary
period at the journey level. A Heavy Equipment Mechanic I may be
promoted to Heavy Equipment Mechanic II after one (1) year of
experience and upon the recommendation of the appointing authority
AND possession of three (3) of the above listed T Series ASE
certifications. These positions have been designated as being
'safety sensitive' and require all eligible offered employment to
successfully pass a drug test prior to employment. Federal law
requires that applicants for positions involving the operation of
certain transit vehicles, revenue service vehicles, the
transportation of hazardous materials, or heavy equipment over
26,001 pounds requiring a commercial driver's license, must undergo
pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment. This
classification is subject to random drug and alcohol testing

may consist of the follow: • WRITTEN EXAMINATION: 100%: A job
related written examination will be administered which may test a
candidate's ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical systems,
vehicle safety and vehicle/equipment repair and maintenance;
knowledge of operating principles and engine driven sub-systems,
occupational hazards and safety precautions and math; skill to
properly use hand and power tools. Candidates must achieve a
passing score to qualify for the eligible list. The Written Exam is
tentatively scheduled for the week of February 6, 2023. VETERAN
PREFERENCE REGULATIONS Candidates applying for veteran's preference
are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application
during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to
indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the
military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit
proof of honorable service for every examination for which
veteran's preference credit is requested. Qualified veterans who
pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final
