Vacancies will be filled in the following specialty areas:

Small Business Self Employed Campus Collection Operations

Small Business Self Employed Campus Exam/AUR Ops



The following are the duties of this position at the full working level. If this vacancy includes more than one grade and you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and receive training to help you grow in this position.


  • Reviews and analyzes internal documents and/or taxpayer returns, prepares coded entries to amend and complete records, refers questionable returns and documents to appropriate areas to determine corrective action.
  • Processes individual or small business returns and cases that involve relationships among different accounts that span more than a single tax period. Assign Employee Identification Numbers (EIN) and temporary Social Security Numbers (SSN). Requests and interprets taxpayer information. Perfects documents and initiates research to correct missing or inaccurate account information, inquiries to third parties, and changes to taxpayer accounts to correct errors.
  • Compiles and maintains functional and/or assigned area records or reports to provide status of work.
  • May serve as a technical advisor, on-the-job (OJT) coach, classroom instructor, or reviewer to provide technical assistance on systemic problems and inconsistencies in the Internal Revenue Manuals (IRM).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    • If you are in a telework eligible position, you may be directed to temporarily telework on a full-time basis due to COVID 19. Employees must be within a 200-mile radius of their official assigned post-of-duty (POD) while in a telework status. Once normal operations resume, employees may be directed back to the office to perform the duties of their position. Telework eligibility does not guarantee telework; employees must meet and sustain IRS telework eligibility requirements and supervisor's approval to participate in the IRS Telework Program. As a reminder - If you are selected for a position, you are responsible for reporting to your designated POD (location) on the negotiated start date or as directed by management.
    • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. (Birth certificate showing birth in the U.S; Unexpired U.S. Passport; Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization; or Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen (Form FS-240))

    • Must successfully complete a background investigation, including a FBI criminal history record check (fingerprint check).




      It is anticipated that there will be significant interest in the announcement. As a result, the announcement will have cut-offs for applicant consideration.       Qualifications

      Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.       You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:



      BASIC REQUIREMENT : GENERAL EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION FOR GS-04: You must have 1 year of general experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-03 grade level in the Federal service. General experience for this position includes progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. This may be paid or non-paid experience.



      OR

      You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: Two (2) years of education above the high school level in an accredited junior college, college, university, business, secretarial or technical school.



      OR

      You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.





      SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS- 5 LEVEL: You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes experience that is in or related to this position and provided you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying experience include experience performing a variety of miscellaneous tasks involving researching and processing financial documents, reviewing information, and determining corrective action on accounts, researching for missing/unclear accounting information, and reviewing financial documents submitted for completeness.



      Education

      A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to .

You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.       Additional information


      • Subject to a 1-year probationary period (unless already completed).

      • This is a bargaining unit position.
      • Tour of Duty: Shifts vary by location. We will try to offer the shift of your preference, but you may be offered an alternate shift upon selection.
      • Actual Tour of Duty will be defined at job offer. Shifts varies as follows:
      • Day Shift - Monday - Friday range between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
      • Swing Shift - Monday - Friday range between 2:00 pm and 1:30 am.
      • Alternative work schedule, staggered work hours may be available.
      • May be eligible for telework based on IRS policy and position selected for. Not all Tax Examining positions are telework eligible.
      • Obtain and use a Government-issued charge card for business-related travel.
      • If this position is designated as hard to fill and you were referred by an IRS employee, the employee may be eligible to receive a bonus for referring you under The Employee Referral Bonus Program (ERBP), recruiting strategy.

        • These are the locations and the number of vacancies currently available: Andover MA (5), Austin TX (5), Chamblee GA (9), Covington KY (2), Holtsville NY (10), Kansas City MO (7), Memphis TN (3), Ogden UT (9) and Philadelphia, PA (3).
        • There may be additional vacancies in Florence, KY and Fresno, CA over the life of the roster. If vacancies become available in these locations, the announcement will be amended to include the number of vacancies per location and a new cutoff date to fill additional positions.
